Sandpit Lane was rebuilt and paved when George Yard was developed. It had formerly been called Sandpit Road and, although very narrow, was one of the main routes for traffic through the town until Pierrefitte road was opened.

There was a vast expanse of bare land each side of the old road (now under George Yard) where free parking was easy. In wet weather it was a sea of huge puddles.
