John Ray FRS, 1627 to 1705, was born in Black Notley, the son of a blacksmith. He was educated at Braintree Grammar School, in St Michaels church. Studied at Cambridge university. Regarded as the father of British naturalists. His most important work was in classification of plants.
The museum is in a former school, the gift of George Courtauld.
