Dating from the 12th century the church was extensively restored in the 16th and 19th centuries. The presence of Roman bricks in the fabric suggests that the prominent site may have been used for an earlier church.

John Ray (1627 - 1705) was a pupil at the grammar school housed in the church before going on to study at Cambridge.
