Braintree Fountain
Commissioned by Sir William J Courtauld and presented to the town to commemorate the Jubilee of King George V in 1937. Sculptor John Hodge.

The area around the church had been densely occupied, obscuring the view of the church. George Bartrum bought the land and Sir William paid for the fountain and built the nurses homes opposite, creating the open space we now enjoy.

The fountain is operated in the summer months. The original pumping machinery is situated under the single storey building opposite, Fountain Lodge, used as a nurses’s home, and later the Citizens Advice Bureau. It is now a youth centre.
