Description
The name 'Belvedere' comes from the house built c1775 by Lord Eardley, which overlooked the Thames and had such a 'beautiful view' (see notes on picture). At that time the surrounding area was rural and known as Lessness Heath.
The area developed with the opening of the North Kent Line in 1849 - small terraced houses were built close to the station at the foot of the hill while the church and many larger villas were located at the top.
The main shopping streets, Nuxley Road and Albert Road, are at the top, with a smaller number at Station Road and Picardy Street. There are a lot of individual or very small groups of shops throughout the Belvedere (DA17) area.
Due to heavy bombing in WW2 many roads still show postwar buildings filling gaps in the original nineteenth century development.
Today Belvedere forms the northern part of the London Borough of Bexley but until 1974 it was in Kent. It still has a Dartford postcode and is on the Dartford phone exchange.

The oldest building is the 12th century Lesnes Abbey (see notes on picture).
Belvedere is also home to Bazalgette's Crossness Pumping Station (see notes on picture)
